Montreal Jazz Festival

Jacques Lemerre, Sound Manager for the Montreal Jazz Festival

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is the largest music festival in the world, a veritable crossroads for jazz musicians, and a home for the most passionate of music fans.

The Festival presents more than 650 performances by musical ambassadors from more than 30 countries. Headliners, living legends and new discoveries perform music from Afrobeat to Brazilian to Arab, from morna to klezmer, from New Orleans to the finest in French jazz.

Artists at the 28th edition of the Festival included Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Holly Cole, Joshua Redman, Keith Jarrett, Billy Cobham, Bill Frisell, and Gary Peacock.

Rane audio processing took center stage at the Festival headquarters - the Montreal Marriott Hotel. Festival artists congregated after hours at the Marriott for impromptu jam sessions that lasted until the wee hours of the morning.

Rane processors used for FOH and monitor mixing included the C4 Quad Compressor/Limiter, G4 Quad Gate, and DEQ 60 Graphic Equalizer.

Soundman Jacques Lemerre was most impressed with the sonic quality and ease of use of the Rane equipment. "My day would start at noon and continue until 4:00am, for a 16-day period," he mused. "The Rane gear performed without a hiccup and sounded spectacular. After years of experience, we have the Festival down to a science, and past years’ rigs have been great. But the addition of Rane processors this year has made it exceptional. It's an addition I’ll want to keep in the future.”

"This is the first time I've inserted a dynamics processor on a jazz trumpet without getting funny looks from the stage. Rane's
C4 Compressor/Limiter is amazingly transparent. And if you didn't tell me that their DEQ 60 Graphic Equalizer was digital, I never would have known!"

The Rane gear was supplied by Contact Distribution through Hugo Tardif, equipment logistics manager at Solotech Inc.
