HAL is Evolving

Rane continues its mind-boggling innovation for installations worldwide with five new products for their HAL System of open architecture DSP products. HAL is an expert in room combining, paging and distributed audio systems for meeting and class rooms, hotels, retail, conference centers and restaurants.

Rane’s new HAL1x and three new 1U expansion products, the EXP1x, EXP3x, & EXP5x, go where no DSP has gone before. The new Expansion Bus between these products now supports 512 inputs and 512 outputs – expanding the number and size of supported applications exponentially. Daisy-chain up to 32 Expanders in any order. Latency of a single EXP hop is only 750 nanoseconds, thus the latency across 32 devices is only 22.4 microseconds.

Now multiroom and campus facilities can spread HAL devices between distant equipment rooms since the HAL Expansion Bus supports 100 meters (300 feet) for copper CAT 5e or better. Or gigabit Ethernet media converters are supported allowing kilometers (miles) between Expanders.

Rane’s new RAD27 USB Audio sound card integrates today’s computer and iPad audio into professional HAL installations – and all without isolation transformers or the compromise of analog interfaces. The RAD27 transports digital audio to & from any HAL up to 100 meters away over Shielded CAT 5e or better cable. The RAD27 can simultaneously playback and record USB audio for presentation podiums, or web-based meetings (Skype…). Or play background music or recorded announcements from any PC into any HAL. With no drivers to install, the RAD27 is instantly compatible with Apple and all versions of Windows between 3.1 and 8.

The HAL1x, EXP1x, EXP3x, EXP5x, RAD27 and Halogen 3.0 software all ship in April 2013.

Rane DJ Video Contest for Winter NAMM

Rane DJ offered a unique challenge to its users in 2012. The challenge was to create a 60-second video explaining why they are a Rane DJ. We received a surprising amount of videos and the creativity of Rane DJs shined through; our mixers even received a couple of marriage proposals. Competitors worldwide were battling it out for a chance to join the Rane DJ crew in the new Winter NAMM booth. Also up for grabs was a coveted Rane Sixty-Two Z mixer.

DJ Soo of Vancouver BC took the runner up spot with an artistic video showing and explaining the many years of abuse he has put his TTM57 through. Despite the dings, dents and scratches his TTM 57SL never let him down. We think it will make a pretty good back up mixer; DJ Soo is now a proud owner of the Sixty-Two Z.

DJ TPHR (topher) of Irvine, CA was the grand prize winner of an all expenses paid trip to Winter NAMM along with a new Sixty-Two Z.

“After my first Rane in 2003, I never looked back. To me it’s all about longevity.  A great mixer and a great design are timeless, like a good piece of music. I’d probably still be fine with my TTM 56 right now… and that’s a testament to Rane’s product design and that’s why I’m a Rane DJ for life” – DJ TPHR 2012

DMC 2012

DMC Champions, left to right:

  • Ritchie Ruftone (UK)3rd Place
  • Izoh (Japan) DMC World Champion 2012
  • Precision (USA) Runner Up

What does it mean to be a DMC Champion?

The World DMC Championships started in 1986 and since it's inception it has been recognized as the battle of all battles for DJ's. Ask any of the former champions and they will tell you that it is a big highlight in their career. Being the battle of all battles, not just anyone can get on the decks. It takes years of dedication, originality and flawless delivery to even be considered.

On September 28th & 29th in London over 100 handpicked DJ's from over 30 countries converged to try their hand at being the 2012 World DMC Champion. Out of the 12,000+ DJ's who entered, it came down to just a few spectacular minutes behind the decks for the champions to be crowned.

Rane would like to congratulate all of the participants in this years World Finals. We would like to encourage all of those who didn't make it and even those who didn't enter to keep at the craft and hopefully we'll see you again next year. Each finalist had to win a regional battle and then the Finals for their respective countries to earn a spot in the World Finals.

Using the right equipment is only part of the equation, but we are pleased to report that 98% of the DJ's competing in the World DMC Finals were using a Rane mixer.

As we look forward to next years competition, Rane would like to give special congratulations to this year's winners. It was a hard fought battle and a true demonstration of why the World DMC Championship is the battle of all battles.

2012 DMC World Champion: DJ Izoh (Japan)

2012 DMC Team Champions: Mixfitz (Belgium)

Two New HAL Models from Rane

Rane continues its legacy for innovation that began with HAL1, an open architecture DSP designed for use in distributed audio applications including room combining, paging, and sound reinforcement; with the introduction of two new HAL models and five new accessories.

HAL2 features an 18 x 18 combination analog-digital I/O, plus an assortment of control ports for Rane’s elegant Digital Remotes and new IR2 Infrared Wall Sensing Remotes. The HAL2 applies the versatile Halogen software interface to venues that don’t need extensive expansion that the HAL1 offers. It includes the same abilities to quickly design room combinations, paging systems, distributed music, and automixers with Rane’s “no virtual wiring needed” approach, but in a smaller I/O configuration to meet smaller budgets.

The HAL3 furthers this trend with Rane’s “Line-Plus” inputs for an impressive 4/6 inputs by 8 outputs at a price point that fits the budget, but still allows open-architecture processing. Couple this with one of Rane’s growing army of RADs (Remote Audio Devices), like the new RAD17 omni full-range boundary microphone for ambient sensing or surveillance, or the one-watt RAD24 for amplifying a speaker in hard-to-reach places. RADs provide 2-way digital to analog audio conversion 500 feet from the rack, farther than Ethernet.

The newest rev of Halogen 1.2 adds support for third-party controllers such as AMX, Crestron and Stardraw Control.

The HAL2, HAL3, RAD17, RAD24, IR2, DR4, DR5 and Halogen 2.0 software (with Ambient Noise Compensation and Feedback Suppression processing blocks) will be available September 2012.

Rane Rane Sixty-One, Sixty-Two & Z-Trip's Sixty-Two Z Mixers for Serato Scratch Live

Turntablism is alive and more creative than ever. Rane and Serato are proud to be supporting partners in that creativity with the introduction of the Rane Sixty-One and Sixty-Two mixers for Serato Scratch Live.

For more than a decade, artists have chosen innovative Rane instruments to advance their art, and three generations of TTM series mixers have been the top pick for many of the world's best performers. These mixers more tightly integrate performer, music, software, and hardware. The artist adds passion, imagination and skills.

The Sixty-Two is a plug-and-play package supporting two computers, 2-deck digital vinyl simulation, SP-6 sample player, software and hardware effects and all the record and playback channels you need.  Software controls for Library, Loops, Cues and SP-6 are laid out for fast and intuitive access. Choose the Sixty-Two and join a community of users dedicated to advancement of the art.

Genre-bending musical pioneer Z-Trip co-designed the Limited Edition Sixty-Two Z Mixer, which features a face plate designed by renown artist, Shepard Fairey and high-quality custom purple cables.

"Every DJ dreams of designing a mixer,” reveals Z-Trip. “The new Rane Sixty-Two Z is my dream realized — it has everything I want in a mixer. Only Rane and Serato could help build such a versatile machine and interface."

If you are looking for the same bullet-proof construction, pristine audio quality and integrated 20-channel sound card but prefer to use your own MIDI controller with outboard software or hardware effects and a single computer, consider the Rane Sixty-One.

Dean Standing at Rane Corporation says “We have a huge group of dedicated users who have been sharing their thoughts and ideas with us on what the next battle mixer should be. As we were developing this next generation mixer, it turned into two products: a basic high-quality mixer with integrated 20-channel sound card and a second mixer that also includes MIDI mappable controls, internal effects and two USB ports. We appreciate that one model doesn’t fit all users.”

"Rane have nailed it with these two incredible mixers," explains Sam Gribben, C.E.O. of Serato. "The Sixty-One is perfect for the pure digital turntablist, with its clean and classic interface and, of course, Rane's amazing magnetic faders. The Sixty-Two is the ultimate party rocking mixer, with all the controls you need at your fingertips."
