Firmware Upgrades

SECURITY WARNING! Before entering CODELOAD to do a RPM unit firmware update with Drag Net 4.1 or higher, set the security level to "UNLIMITED ACCESS" in Device Security Setup. Passwords enabled in other security settings can cause a RPM unit to be trapped in CODELOAD during the firmware update. Escaping this trap requires the unit to be returned to the Factory! Once the firmware is updated the issue goes away.

What is firmware?

Firmware is software code that resides inside a hardware chip inside most microprocessor devices, including the RPM family of products. While firmware is technically software, it dictates how the hardware behaves -- thus it's "between" soft and hard. Thus the term firmware.

Why is firmware?

New firmware versions are created to support new functionality or to fix defects in previous firmware versions. You can update the firmware inside an RPM using a separate application, called the Update Device Firmware Wizard. Drag Net will tell you if you need to update your firmware and run the Wizard for you.

How do I know what firmware revision is inside my RPM?

In Drag Net, right-click on a Live Device and choose 'Properties' to view the firmware version. This is the only way to check the firmware revision of an older RPM 26z or RPM 2. The RPM 88/44/22 firmware version is briefly displayed on the front panel during power up. If a firmware number is not displayed during power up, you have an old firmware version that must be updated.

How do I download new firmware into an RPM?

The firmware inside the RPM is updated via Ethernet -- use either a crossover cable connected directly to the device, or update firmware over the network, or, starting with Drag Net 4.1 (or later), update firmware over the Internet.

New versions of Drag Net automatically identify potential software/firmware mismatches. An exclamation point(!) beside a Live device indicates a mismatch. Any attempt to communicate with the Live device will prompt you to run the Update Device Firmware Wizard.

Alternatively, you can run the Update Device Firmware Wizard at any time from the Tools menu, or from the Windows Start Menu (Start > Program Files > Rane Corporation > Drag Net > Firmware Update).

Drag Net Version Changes

DN What's New in Version 4.2.1:

  • Auto Mixer/Ducker enhancements:
    • New Threshold with Last-On keeps the microphone which last detected audio 'on', until another becomes active.
    • New, lower Threshold detection minimum (-70 dBFS) detects gnat wing sounds near the mic (assuming proper gain structure and mic placement are used).
    • New adjustable Gate Depth per input lets you define how far off, 'off ' is.
    • Ability to bypass the Look-Ahead Delay.
  • Saved Drag Net configuration files are now merged into one file (not three). No more arriving at the job site only to find that you didn't copy all three Drag Net files to your laptop -- they're all in a single file now!
  • "Available PEQ" is now easier. While EQing with the parametric block, it's now very easy to find the next available unused filter with the new PEQ coloring scheme. We've also tripled the number of available BW (Q) values.
  • NTSC and PAL frame displays added to the Delay block.

Fix in Version 4.1.3:

  • RPM 2m firmware updated for compatibility. No other units affected.

Fix in Version 4.1.2:

  • RPM 88 firmware updated for compatibility. No other units affected.

New in Version 4.1.1:

  • Supports the new RPM 2m
    • 2 mic/line inputs, 2 outputs on XLR and Euroblocks plus an AES3 output (XLR)
  • Internet communications support
    • Configure, transfer, update firmware and remote bitmaps, everything except make Julienne Fries over the Internet
  • Automatic Update Device Firmware
    • Update firmware with a single click
  • Remote Reboot Device
    • Re-power via software

Fixed in Version 4.0.2:

  • SR 4 was being set to selections above 8 when it was mapped to presets (or other group levels) above 8, because of inverse Selection/GroupLevel table setup failure. Last 8 entries in table were not being ignored. Fixed both in firmware and DragNet Software. Selection/GroupLevel table and max selection were being sent to the RPM but not the last entry in the table, which triggers the RPM to set up the inverse table and send the max selection to the remotes. Fixed in Drag Net by setting all entries when anything is changed from the default.

Fixes in Version 4.0.1:

  • Feedback Suppression DSP block
    • 5, 10 & 15 filter versions for optimum use of DSP resources
    • Fixed, floating and user-adjustable PEQ filter types, with bandwidths as narrow as 1/40th of an octave
    • Reset floating filters on power up or user-defined timeout

Fixes in version 2.0.2:

  • Priority Auto Mixer/Ducker depth now ranges from 0 to -80 dB, plus Mute.
  • Priority Auto Mixer/Ducker now allows application of Priority NOM on each output rather than a single global NOM setting.
  • Single-click on Palette to place Priority Auto Mixer/Ducker ducker block no longer generates error message.
  • Preset block list is now being completely refreshed/cleared when recalling Presets.
  • Updated the application installer to exclude duplicate versions of RPM 26z templates (DSP1.r26, DSP2.r26, etc.). If a previous installation of Drag Net installed these files, simply locate and remove them (they are found under the Templates\Rane folder of the installation directory.
    • Don't forget to remove the associated .mem files as well!
